Armenia
September 25, 2001:
The pope had sought to make a visit to
Armenia for years and scheduled it to take part in celebrations by the ancient
Armenian Apostolic Church marking 1,700 years of Christianity in this country.
Kazakhstan, September 2001:
The pope spent four days here, his first Apostolic
visit since the terror attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. He reiterated
that the Catholic Church respects "authentic Islam" and that those responsible
for the terror attacks on the U.S. should be brought to justice. The pope
stressed the good relations between Muslims and Christians in Kazakstan, and
sought to strengthen his own church, a tiny minority comprised mainly of
descendants of Catholics who were sent to labor camps and exile here.
