Funeral Pictures
of Pope John Paul II

VATICAN CITY Apr 8, 2005 — With presidents and kings looking on, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims in St. Peter's Square sang, applauded and chanted for the church to declare John Paul II a saint as the pope was laid to rest Friday in an unprecedented gathering of the mighty and the meek.

The crowds for the funeral Mass — estimated at 4-5 million — were giddy and tearful, joyous and reverent.

German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, standing at the center of the altar, celebrates the funeral service for Pope John Paul II, at St. Peter's Square, in the Vatican, April 8, 2005.
In his homily, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger described the pope as "a priest to the very end" and traced the extraordinary arc of the pope's life from his days as a factory worker in Poland to leader of the world's more than 1 billion Catholics.
