2001

Greece: The Pope visited Greece for the first time in 2001 as part of a six-day trip that included Syria and Malta. The pope stopped in Greece for a personal pilgrimage with much wider implications - trying to heal nearly 1,000 years of discord between the Vatican and Orthodox churches. He met with Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos and Archbishop Christodoulos, leader of Greece's Orthodox Church. Pope John Paul II was the first pope to visit Greece in nearly 1,300 years

Syria, Malta: The pope visited Syria for the first time in 2001 for four days as part of a six-day trip that included Greece and Malta. The pontiff met the Muslim country's President Bashar Assad and Syria's great Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Kuftaro, toured part of the Syrian Golan Heights and visited several holy sites and cities, including St. George's church in Quneitra.
