    Jordan, March 2000: During the first papal pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 36 years, an emotional Pope John Paul II called for a resolution of the region's "grave and urgent" conflicts as he began a weeklong journey to retrace the footsteps of Jesus
    Syria: The Pope visited Syria for the first time in 2001 for four days as part of a six-day trip that included Greece and Malta. The pontiff met the Muslim country's President Bashar Assad and Syria's great Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Kuftaro, toured part of the Syrian Golan Heights and visited several holy sites and cities, including St. George's church in Quneitra.
