Romania, May 7, 1999: The Pope made a three-day trip to Romania, the first mainly Orthodox country visited by a Roman pontiff in nearly 1,000 years. In the picture, John Paul II and Romanian's Orthodox Christian Patriarch Teoctist arrive at Izvor Park in Bucharest where the Mass celebrated by the Pope was attended by 200,000 persons. Hungary, Aug. 1991, Sept. 6, 1996: The Pope has visited Hungary twice: once as part of a weeklong tour including Poland and once during a two-day trip solely to Hungary. Czech Republic, April 21, 1990, May 20, 1995, April 25, 1997: Pope John Paul II made three dedicated visits to the Czech Republic Slovakia, Sept. 11, 2003: The Pope begins a four-day visit to Slovakia. - June 30, 1995: The Pope made a four-day tour of Slovakia. Slovenia, May 17, 1996, Sept. 19, 1999: The Pope has made two visits to Slovenia since the tiny nation broke with the old Yugoslavia and triggered war in 1991. The Vatican was the first state in the world to recognize Slovenia's independence.
