South America



   
Venezuela,
Jan. 1985, Feb. 1996: The Pope visited Venezuela during trips to South and Central America. During his 1996 visit, he urged Venezuelans to overcome the severe economic crisis through faith and hard work.

    Colombia, July 1986: The pontiff spent a week in Colombia and St. Lucia

    Ecuador, Jan. 1985: The Pope visited Ecuador as part of his 11-day trip including Venezuela, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago

    Brazil, June 30, 1980, June 1982, Oct. 12, 1991, Oct. 2, 1997: The Pope has made 4 visits just to Rio de Janeiro where he has offered masses, but he also visited Brazil in relation to the dispute between Argentina and Great Britain regarding the Falkland Islands in 1982.

    Peru, Jan. 1985, May 1988: The Pope visited Peru twice while traveling through Central and South America.

    Bolivia, May 1988: The pontiff visited Bolivia during a 12-day tour of South America that included Uruguay, Paraguay and Peru

    Chile, March 1987: The Pope spent two weeks in South America visiting Uruguay, Chile and Argentina

    Paraguay, May 1988: Visited Paraguay during a 12-day tour of South America.

    Uruguay, March 1987, May 1988.

    Argentina, June 1982, March 1987: The pope visited Argentina in 1982 because of Argentina's dispute with Great Britain over the Falkland Islands. His visit in 1987 was part of a trip including visits to Uruguay and Chile and the celebration of the II World Youth Day in Buenos Aires.
